School Motto
Our school motto is ‘DAT DEUS INCREMENTUM’ (Latin) in which ‘DAT’ means ‘gives’, ‘DEUS’ refers to ‘God’ and ‘INCREMENTUM’ translates as ‘growth’. As a whole, it means that ‘God makes us grow’, [1] which is known as the family motto of Bishop Baker.
‘Míng Daò Rì Xīn’, the Chinese paraphrase of the school motto that stems from both the Bible [2] and
the old Chinese classic Lĭjì, [3] conveys the belief that ‘understanding the Truth helps people grow spiritually day by day’.
- This Latin motto is quoted from 1 Corinthians 3:6 of the New Testament that ‘ὁ θεὸς ηὔξανεν’ (Greek) or ‘God gave the growth’. (NRSV)
- ‘Míng Daò’ derives from 1 Timothy 2:4 of the New Testament that ‘God desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.’ (NRSV)
- ‘Rì Xīn’ originates from Lĭjì-Dàxué that ‘On the bathing tub of Tāng, the following words were engraved: “If you can one day renovate yourself, do so from day to day. Yea, let there be daily renovation.” ’
